by: Michael Knell

Well Darlings,

How was it for you? GB’s Budget?

Whether you see that GB above as “Great Britain”, “Gordon Brown”, or “Grab-it Back” is, I suppose, very subjective. Gay people have come out of it with a bit of a mixed deal. If you like a couple of evenings at a pub or a club and enjoy a pint or two and a cigarette (while you still may) then you’ve been hit hard again. Another 8p on twenty fags and 4p on a pint may easily cost you over £116.00 annually. And if you are a pensioner with one of the few simple pleasures left in life being a smoke and a pint, add these increases to the rising council tax bills and the massive rises in gas and electricity prices and you are in very deep do-do. Incidentally, never mind that 1,000 jobs have been lost in our brewing industry over the last 12 months, beer duty continues to rise. It has risen a staggering 22% since 1997. Beer is now taxed more than wine in relative terms, and we still import most of our wine as opposed to our beer – the beer is usually made in the UK and provides us with jobs even if it has a foreign name on the label.

Treasury revenue forecasts 37.4% tax next year, and a projected rise to an all-time high of 37.8% in 2007/8, and it doesn’t stop there. They predict 38.0%, 38.1% and 38.2% in the subsequent years – and how often have you known them to over-estimate? Folks, the worst is yet to come. Some are already saying the Treasury’s forecast of current budget surpluses in 2007/8 and subsequent years is ‘over optimistic’, although they think it “may be able to muddle through” with a combination of windfall taxes and adjustments to the cycle. No prizes for guessing the direction of those adjustments!

So what else have gay people received? Well, for tax purposes, same-sex couples who have registered in a civil partnership will now be treated as married couples and as such will be free from inheritance tax and Capital Gains Tax. That’s “Whoopee!” if you are in the money and not claiming benefits where being “married” will adversely affect the amount you can claim. But perhaps the good news on condoms covers you. No longer to be considered a “luxury” item, the VAT on condoms will be reduced to 5%. However if you are one of the 25% of gay people who only use free condoms, then this won’t affect you – nor will it if you find sex too taxing anyway (for some this beats saying they can’t get it!), and don’t bother any more!

All in all, I think the Budget was everything we expected. The overall tax burden has risen significantly yet again, and I wouldn’t object to that so much if I could see some advantages or benefits, but I don’t. It seems the more we are taxed, and the more the government spends our money, the worse things are becoming. To me this suggests that money will never solve the problems we have – it’s time we looked elsewhere for the solutions.

Moving on: Rainbow Network has revealed statistics of concern with their online poll. 33% of those surveyed in the UK and America said they had not come out to their doctor, with a further 11% saying they were worried they would be discriminated against should they do so. It is possible that this feeling is not without some justification.

Going back a few years, I was privileged to help the Swindon Project for AIDS Counselling and Education (SPACE) with a survey of all the local GPs (it took in all the then Thamesdown area; a significant area) to find out their attitudes towards gay people and their knowledge of gay issues. Although the substantial questionnaire was accepted well, and there were only two abstainers (I believe), the information gathered worried us greatly. I guess matters will have improved since those days as, like we did, most towns and cities will have had their similar organisations informing and educating – but will they have improved enough? Perhaps it’s time for another survey to find out.

When you consider it once took a voluntary gay social group and a local commercial radio station broadcast to get the existence of HIV and AIDS actually recognised by an Area Health Authority, then we should never be complacent just because we read of great medical advances – they may not necessarily always be happening in our own back yard!

I can remember when I moved from the outskirts of Swindon, buying a house in the town, I had to change my doctor and I landed up with quite a choice, but armed with my privileged information I was able to choose wisely, and I chose what turned out to be the best doctor for a gay person I have ever known. Data protection can sometimes be a double-edged sword. It would have been beneficial to all gay gay people in the area to have known which doctors had a good attitude towards gay people and which were keeping abreast of gay issues – but the law prohibited them being advised. Nevertheless I noted the news still got around. Silly write-ins to the local gay newsletter’s Letters Page would appear like: “Who apart from family and friends do you send Xmas cards to? I always send one to my milkman because he never forgets me, and one to my doctor, Doctor X, because he’s so friendly and well informed . . .” The law may be an ass, but the people may be inventive!

I’m pleased to see that across the pond a new report has concluded there is no child-centred reason to prevent gays and lesbians from becoming adoptive parents. Adam Pertman, the Executive Director of the Adoption Institute is reported as saying: “There’s simply no credible research to indicate that children are harmed in any way when they’re adopted by gay and lesbian parents, but there’s lots of evidence to indicate that they do well in those homes. So, if we as a society believe that kids should be our primary concern, we have to put aside our prejudices and preconceived notions, and do the best we can for them.”

It’s encouraging for “The Land of the Free”, where all too often the tremendous advances made in technology and ease of lifestyle there have not always been matched by advances in modern and sensible thinking. Apparently Florida is now the only state with an all-out ban on gay adoption – and we all know about Florida, don’t we? Not electing to beat about the Bush, it is a Mickey Mouse state!

Must go darlings, there’s another book out this year, and I’m already being pushed for the next one even though this is one is still in the last stages of proofing. Many a midnight hour is being burnt at the moment, and I think I’m sending a good friend into insanity by asking her to check it for me. Do watch out for The Elephant’s Nest, it should be in the shops sometime this summer (good for the holiday flight!), but please don’t divulge the ending! A gay book? Shh! Mum’s the word!

Calif. gay marriage trial re-enacted on Internet – Yahoo! News

SAN FRANCISCO – Where there’s the Web, there’s a way.

Seeking to overcome a broadcast blackout imposed by the U.S. Supreme Court, a pair of gay Los Angeles filmmakers have undertaken the task of faithfully recreating the federal trial on California’s same-sex marriage ban for the Internet. All 60-plus hours of it. Every “um,” “Yes, your honor” and “objection!”

John Ainsworth and John Ireland are using 3,000 pages of court transcripts as scripts and professional actors as the main characters to produce the weighty re-enactment of a case that some have described as the gay marriage movement’s Brown v. Board of Education.

“This is something I believe should be a resource for Americans,” Ireland said. “This is a process we as a society are going through, and there is nothing like good drama with professional actors that allows people to consider the lives of others that are different from them.”

Chief U.S. Judge Vaughn Walker announced before the trial that he wanted to record the historic proceedings and transmit them to other federal courthouses and on YouTube. But a divided Supreme Court overruled Walker two days into the trial and blocked the broadcasts, saying they could subject gay marriage opponents to harassment.

Ainsworth and Ireland had been looking forward to watching the trial unfold, having both married longtime partners before California voters enacted the ban known as Proposition 8 in 2008. Undeterred by the blackout, they quickly mobilized a film crew.

They posted a casting call on Craigslist for actors to play Walker, competing lawyers and the intrepid witnesses, then mined their Hollywood contacts to find trained thespians they concluded would be better-suited to the demanding roles. The filmmakers are funding the project with their own money.

To their delight, veteran actors volunteered for many of the nonpaying parts. Actresses Tess Harper (“Tender Mercies,” “Crimes of the Heart”) and Adrienne Barbeau, who co-starred in the 1970s-era sitcom “Maude,” were cast respectively as a co-plaintiff and an expert witness.

Other actors with lengthy television credits assumed many of the other key roles, including those of plaintiffs lawyers Theodore Olson and David Boies, the litigators best-known for representing George W. Bush and Al Gore in the disputed 2000 election. For instance, Jack Laufer, who is playing Boies, is a character actor who has had recurring roles in law-related dramas such as “CSI,” “Judging Amy” and “L.A. Law.”

The performances, part cinema verite and part “Judge Judy,” are word-for-word reproductions of the trial. But the actors have not had the benefit of watching the people they are playing and in most cases received their “scripts” when they showed up on the set — a mock courtroom at the University of Southern California law school.

“I am having so much fun, and it is so rewarding,” said Ted Heyck, a retired prosecutor and actor who was cast as Judge Walker based on his physical resemblance and legal acumen. Although his role requires him to be in every scene, most of the time just listening, Heyck said he has gotten a sense of Walker’s personality from reading how he handled evidence, uncooperative witnesses and his remarks on the broadcast issue.

Ainsworth acts and runs a youth theater camp, while Ireland has experience in filmmaking, including doing a documentary on gay adoption and a series of commercials featuring same-sex couples and their families.

Working at a breakneck production schedule, the two have filmed about two-thirds of the trial so far and posted three hour-and-a-half-long “chapters” of the first day’s testimony on YouTube and their Web site, Marriagetrial.com. They hope to get the rest up as fast they can.

“We are in a spot to make this, to recreate this,” said Ireland, 39. “One way or another, we know enough people, we have enough enthusiasm to fill the void on Youtube. I’m of a generation where I expect to find answers on the Internet.”

Although the two men opposed Proposition 8, they said they are trying to keep their personal views out of the re-creation so viewers can judge for themselves whether the evidence for denying gays the right to wed is there. Their Web site includes commentary from a writer who was inside the courtroom and a USC constitutional law professor.

“We are trying to present this as close to a historical document as possible,” said Ainsworth, 35. “We told the actors, ‘These are real people, so we need to let them speak for themselves.’”

The trial, the first in a federal court to explore whether the U.S. Constitution prohibits states from outlawing same-sex unions, is currently on a hiatus and will resume most likely in March with closing arguments. Ainsworth and Ireland plan to wrap up that episode as soon as possible after the trial ends.

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Gay Rights – RE: What-kind-selfish-couple-want-adopt-stolen-children

I think this article just about sums up how far political correctness has gone, and been abused by Stasi style Social Services. It still seems that the real people that matter ie: the children who are old enough to express their wishes and also people that know better are being ignored.

1. The children want to stay with the Grandparents, but the Social Services say no.
2. The little girl is scared of men but is being ignored.
3. There are plenty of heterosexual couples who are willing to and can adopt these children.

This is just so target figures can be met for GAY COUPLES. If you read this article everything Little-john says is correct perhaps if we had some one like him running the country we would,t be in this mess. Someone with the balls to crush this crass Political Incorrectness. Because this really that is the term for what is happening. How can this be correct logical thinking? and finally put the people that matter first. It has been proven that the best environment for children is a mother father environment. 90% of people in Scotland were against GAY Adoption yet as usual the voice of the people is ignored. This is quite as the title says stolen to order.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/articl…

Adoption By Gay Couples

Gay Rights has become a highly debated subject in recent years. The majority of people now agree that gay people and gay couples deserve the same rights as anyone else, but there are still people with strong opposing view. This is especially the case when it comes to adoption.

Gay people have been granted equal rights in many areas, with civil partnerships the biggest victory for gay right campaigners. Civil Partnerships were introduced in the UK in 2005 and are a form of gay couples registering their partnership; very much like marriage under a different name. This was a way of legalising a marriage type institution for gay people, but getting around the argument that marriage should be for male-female couples only.

Same-sex adoption is an area that has been pursued heavily, and one that produces much debate. Some think that there should be equal right in all areas and therefore same-sex adoption should be legal, while others are completely against it. This includes many religious groups, especially the Catholic Church. The UK is amongst many nations where same-sex adoption is now legal, and more countries are bringing in similar laws all the time.

Below are some of the points that are being put forward on both sides of the gay-adoption argument.

ARGUMENT FOR

•	There are so many children waiting for adoption so it only makes sense to utilise gay couples wishing to adopt.
•	One of the main points made against same-sex adoption is that children need male and female role models. However the traditional family is not as common as it once was, and therefore many children do not grow up with both biological parents anyway.
•	It is morally right that gay couples should be given the same adoption rights as straight couples.
•	There is no reason why gay people cannot be good parents.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST

•	It is best for children to grow up with a male and female role model. Even when parents separate, the children see both in the majority of cases.
•	Children could be bullied if their parents are gay.
•	Children could suffer psychologically by being bought up by a gay couple.

The question has to be asked, what is most important with adoption?

The most important thing is that children are loved and cared for, and therefore does it m
1000
atter if they are bought up by one male, one female, one of each, or two of either? And is sexuality important in someone’s ability to bring up children? If the answer to these questions is no, then this suggests that adoption should be allowed for gay couples.

Most of the argument against same-sex adoption can be countered.

•	Many have claimed it is best children are bought up by both biological parents, but many do not stay together anyway.
•	Emotional problems can stem from being bought up by gay parents – many studies that have been carried out looking into the subject though, suggest there are usually no psychological affects.
•	Being bought up in a stable family is best for children – but civil partnerships can be just as stable as marriages.

THE LAW

Before the current laws came in one person was able to adopt a child. This meant that an adopted child could potentially live with this person and his or her partner, even if they were in a same-sex relationship. There were also situations where a gay woman would become pregnant through artificial insemination and then the child could live with her and her partner. This gave lesbian couples an advantage over all-male couples. In many ways then, it was possible for gay couples to bring up children.

New laws were implemented in 2006 so that same-sex couples could adopt a child together. There are strict adoption rules, but they are the same for gay and straight couples.

Many adoption agencies have ties with religious groups. Those with catholic connections refused to allow adoption by gay couples. This was ruled as being illegal in June 2009. Many of these organisations claimed they would rather close down than adopt to gay couples. However, most have abided by the rules.
